Detention and imprisonment: spot the differences

What are the differences between the concepts of detention and imprisonment? Carolina helps us spotting them.

May 3, 2024

In the news, we often hear (or read) the words detention and imprisonment. Both mean that someone is deprived of their freedom for a certain period of time.

But what are the differences between the concepts of detention and imprisonment?

When are they applied? How are they applied? Why are they applied?

And, by the way (because it is also often in the news), we also talk about preventive detention… and even what we all know as house arrest.

Helping us to discover the differences and understand all of this better is Carolina Soares, a lawyer at VFA.
